General Overview

The aim of the day was to introduce young people, especially those in their final year of secondary school and university, to the various opportunities offered by the EU concerning foreign affairs and to motivate them to take advantage of these opportunities. Most of the speakers were young people who shared their experiences. The programme was partly in English. The introduction was in Czech and English, and some of the speakers also spoke English. We wanted to show the young people that a foreign experience is an opportunity to progress.

The whole day was based on sharing stories of different people. The first activity was a lecture called “Study, Travel, Work in the EU,” where they learned basic information about Erasmus+, the European Solidarity Corps, Discover EU, etc. The second activity was called “5+1 Stories from the World of Progress,” where six speakers spoke informally about their experiences abroad. Each presentation lasted 15 minutes, and the presentation consisted only of photos. The youngest participant was 17 years old and had benefited from several Erasmus+ youth projects since she was 13. Sabina, on the other hand, had just started university and talked about hitchhiking across Europe as well as her DiscoverEU experience. Alena talked about studying at a foreign university.

The last speaker was the Ambassador of Ireland, Mr. Alan Gibbons, who showed how far foreign experience can take you. All the speakers were then available for discussion in the auditorium, where there was a fair of exhibitors offering other foreign experiences. The day also included an informal discussion with students from the Technical University of Liberec about their international experiences. The event was attended by 12 secondary schools from the whole Liberec region, university students, and other young people. In total, more than 1,500 people attended the event.

Eurocentrum is a partner of Eurodesk in the Czech Republic and as the main organiser of the event we placed the Eurodesk logo on all promotional materials (posters, medallions, website, social media, etc..). We also had information and leaflets about Eurodesk and materials about opportunities for young people on our information stand. Eurodesk was introduced at the official opening of the event. And the whole day was focused on opportunities for young people.

Thematic Category Correspondence

(50 points max)

How does this initiative (project, event, material) correspond to the thematic category

At first impression, the event might seem rather classical and not very innovative. However, our innovation lies in the details and in the execution. We aim to really let the young speak to the young. We listen to them and let them participate in the event. A very important element for us is the informal personal delivery during the lectures. We do not want to teach young people everything about every detail of the programme but rather motivate them based on real stories, mostly from people in our region. Young people helped us to design and implement the programme, and most of the speakers were also young people.

There was also a part of the programme conducted in English, and to further enhance the international aspect, some of the speakers were from abroad (e.g., the Irish Ambassador, a student from Türkiye). We tried to emphasise the stories, and the presentations were short, personal, and dynamic, with speakers using only pictures. Speakers were arranged from youngest to oldest (from a young student to an ambassador) and were chosen so that someone could take inspiration from each. After the lectures, the speakers had a reserved place in the auditorium where visitors could chat with them informally, get to know each other, and exchange contacts.

Impact

(30 points max)

How did your project impact young people / your community?

We have received great feedback from teachers and young people. The capacity for secondary schools (400 people) was filled within 24 hours of the event date being released. Twelve secondary schools from across the region signed up. It was important to us that these included a variety of schools, such as technical and apprenticeship schools, which are sometimes harder to reach. We then toured the schools that didn’t get into the programme at the university individually until the end of 2024. The rest of the visitors were mostly students from the Technical University of Liberec. Young people learned about programmes they had not known about before.

As the event took place on 16 October, this was also the deadline for applying for DiscoverEU. A sufficient number of 18-year-olds filled in the application form on the spot! We also showcased specific and current Erasmus+ youth exchange projects and received information from a few students that they had actually participated in one of these projects and gone abroad. We believe that how we passed on information throughout the day and the care in selecting the guests helped motivate the young people, dispelled their fears, and helped them take that first difficult step.

Green Focus

(10 points max)

Did your project have any green focus and/or did you implement any eco-friendly measures when organising it?

  1. Registration and promotion of the event were done online. We kept the printing of event materials to a minimum.
  2. For serving refreshments (coffee, water, tea, etc.), we used washable dishes or biodegradable packaging. We avoided using plastic completely. Water was offered from jugs.
  3. We used eco-friendly, durable, recycled, and recyclable promotional items. We minimised the use of physical handouts.
  4. We provided catering that used local and organic ingredients. We offered vegetarian and vegan options that have a smaller ecological footprint.
  5. The location of the event was easily accessible by public transport.
