The DiscoverEU Inclusion project, “Discover Europe with the Marginalised Youth of Braunschweig,” implemented by Braunschweig’s International Youth Work, targets (socio-economically) disadvantaged adolescents typically excluded from international mobility opportunities. Collaboration with youth centres, school social workers, youth social services, vocational schools, and the youth migration service facilitated the identification and engagement of suitable participants, many experiencing their inaugural trip abroad.
Central objectives encompass delivering secure intercultural travel to enhance resilience, autonomy, interpersonal skills, European identification, and self-efficacy via participatory processes. Six cohorts of five participants each autonomously designed itineraries to France, Italy, and Spain, supported by age-matched peer volunteers. Activities included urban exploration, cultural immersion, culinary discovery, and experiential learning such as paragliding.
The intervention employed a phased methodology: initial recruitment and group assembly through local networks; pre-travel workshops emphasising safety protocols, language acquisition, itinerary development, budget management, and public transport navigation; implementation with volunteer accompaniment; and post-travel evaluation incorporating reflective sessions, Youthpass certification, committee presentations, and groundwork for a 2025 successor initiative.
