What is it about?

Ecologics is a youth-led sustainability and digital innovation programme that empowered university students and recent graduates to actively contribute to local green transition solutions for the industrial sector in Bursa, Türkiye. The project combined capacity building with real-life decision-making and problem-solving: young people worked on concrete challenges related to carbon emissions, water consumption and waste management, in cooperation with the municipality, universities, civil society and private-sector partners.

The programme followed a multi-stage pathway. First, an open online awareness phase reached a wide group of young people with topics such as circular economy, carbon/water footprint and AI for sustainability. Then, selected participants attended face-to-face trainings covering sustainability fundamentals, generative AI tools, project cycle management and design thinking. In the next stage, finalist teams worked with industry-related cases and mentoring support to develop feasible solutions. The process culminated in an intensive hackathon and a public final event where teams presented their proposals to a jury, received feedback, and the most promising solutions were awarded and encouraged for further development.

By linking youth learning with local stakeholders and real-world environmental priorities, Ecologics strengthened young people’s skills, agency and participation in sustainability-related decision-making at the local level.

How is this project relevant to the specific category?

Ecologics strongly corresponds to the Youth Participation & Democracy category by placing young people at the centre of sustainability-related decision-making processes at local level. Rather than being passive recipients of information, participants were empowered as active contributors who analysed real environmental challenges and proposed concrete solutions in cooperation with local authorities, universities, civil society organisations and industry representatives.

Throughout the project, young people engaged in participatory processes that mirror democratic practices: they identified problems related to carbon emissions, water consumption and waste management in real industrial contexts; worked collaboratively in teams; discussed priorities with stakeholders; and presented their proposals publicly during the final event. This structure allowed young people to experience how evidence-based dialogue, collective problem-solving and transparent evaluation function in practice.

Ecologics also strengthened young people’s understanding of active citizenship by linking environmental responsibility with civic engagement. Participants were encouraged to reflect on how sustainability policies, climate regulations and local governance decisions affect their communities, and how youth voices can influence these processes. By interacting directly with decision-makers and experts, young people gained confidence, agency and practical experience in contributing to solutions that matter for their region.

In this way, Ecologics went beyond awareness-raising and created a participatory framework in which young people exercised democratic skills, contributed to local sustainability discussions, and experienced their role as active citizens shaping the green transition.

What was the impact of the project?

Ecologics had a strong and measurable impact on both young people and the local community. More than 500 university students and recent graduates were reached through online and face-to-face activities, gaining practical knowledge on sustainability, circular economy, carbon and water footprint analysis, and the use of digital and AI-based tools for environmental solutions.

For young participants, the project strengthened key competences such as critical thinking, teamwork, problem-solving, communication and civic engagement. By working on real-life industrial challenges, young people experienced a meaningful learning process that increased their motivation, employability and confidence to participate in sustainability-related initiatives beyond the project.

At community level, Ecologics created a bridge between young people, local authorities, universities and the private sector. The solutions developed by the youth teams contributed to raising awareness among local stakeholders about innovative, youth-driven approaches to green transition challenges. The public final event and media coverage further amplified this impact, making youth perspectives visible and valued in local sustainability discussions.

The project also fostered long-term cooperation among stakeholders and laid the groundwork for future youth participation in local decision-making processes related to environmental and digital transformation.

Did the project have any green focus?

Green principles were at the core of Ecologics, both in content and in implementation. The project focused on key environmental challenges such as carbon emissions, water consumption, waste management and circular economy, encouraging young people to develop practical and sustainable solutions for real-life contexts.

Eco-friendly measures were applied during project activities by prioritising digital communication and online tools, reducing printed materials, and promoting resource-efficient event organisation. Face-to-face activities were concentrated in single venues to minimise travel, and participants were encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible practices throughout the project.

By combining environmental awareness with practical action and decision-making, Ecologics contributed to fostering long-term green attitudes and responsible behaviour among young people and stakeholders.

How did you ensure Eurodesk's visibility in your project?

Eurodesk visibility was ensured throughout the project by consistently branding communication materials and activities with the Eurodesk name and visual identity. Ecologics opportunities, calls for participants and key milestones were promoted via Eurodesk Gürsu’s main social media channels (especially Instagram) and partner communication networks. During trainings, the hackathon and the final event, Eurodesk was introduced as the main youth information network for European opportunities, and participants were encouraged to follow Eurodesk channels and use Eurodesk resources for mobility and learning opportunities.
