Title of the project

EP GOAL - EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT GOES LOCAL

Start date:

January 1, 2021

End date:

June 30, 2022

Source of funding:

EP-GOAL was an initiative co-funded by the European Parliament. Call for proposals COMM/SUBV/2020/E - ENGAGEMENT.

Objectives:

EPGOAL was an initiative implemented in Italy to promote the values and the founding principles of the EU and bring citizens closer to the Institutions, reducing the perceived distance and promoting greater awareness of the role that everyone can have in building the Europe of the future. This goal was achieved through the direct involvement in the activities of young citizens, who have become the protagonists of EPGOAL, the so-called “EPGOAL Ambassadors”, and who have marked the timing and directly carried out the planned activities. During the 18 months of the project, in fact, FPD has involved about 30 young italian people, starting from a 2-day training course on the methodologies of the street debate and the podcasts. Subsequently, in the squares of the bigger italian cities, as in those of the smaller towns, the EPGOAL Ambassadors debated with passers-by, citizens of all ages and with different socio-cultural backgrounds , on issues like the environment and climate change, employment, hospitality and integration, human rights. The ideas, suggestions, expectations collected from these debates were discussed directly by the Ambassadors themselves with some Italian MEPs and EU policy experts through the recording of podcasts on FattoRadio. The EPGOAL APP was created, constantly updated with news on the EU Parliament and Together.eu., as well as a simulation on the functioning of the EU Parl. in a High School. The final event held in Rome, in office of the EU-P. in Italy.

Why does it correspond to the thematic category:

The founding values of the EU are becoming less and less known, especially by the younger generations, who should instead be encouraged to feel that they are the architects of the EU's future and to promote its values to their peers. In order to have a real impact, EPGOAL envisaged the direct involvement of young people in the design and implementation of a modern communication campaign, which used innovative tools, street debates and podcasts, first and foremost. The young people who participated, the so-called EPGOAL Ambassadors, felt so involved in the initiative that they worked hard to help grow it and to apply additional or corrective actions, if necessary, in order to achieve the expected results and amplify the impact of the action. Youth participation occurred on multiple levels and through different actions: - Training Courses to learn about the European Institutions and discover new methodologies of active and democratic European participation;- Organization of Street Debates in their cities in order to stimulate citizen participation on the issues addressed by the project;- Conceiving and participating in podcasts on FattoRadio, directly confronting MEP's and European policy experts;- Visiting the Italian headquarters of the European Parliament in Rome;- Realization of the EP-GOAL webapp and final toolkit that can be consulted online.

The impact the initiative had on young people and the local community:

The overall goal of the action was to invest in bringing the EU and its institutions closer to Italian citizens. Within this general framework, EPGOAL envisaged, in order to have a real impact, the direct involvement of young people in the design and implementation of a modern communication campaign, which used innovative tools, street debates and podcasts, first and foremost. The young people who participated, the so-called EPGOAL Ambassadors, felt so involved in the initiative that they worked hard to help grow it and to apply additional or corrective actions, if necessary, to achieve the expected results and amplify the impact of the action. In detail, EPGOAL has achieved specific outcomes, namely:- motivating the younger generation to take the EU by the hand and lead it toward a future built with a bottom-up approach;- providing some peripheral Italian territories with EPGOAL ambassadors, motivated young people who in turn, thanks to their experience, can motivate other young people, especially in terms of participation in decision-making at every level (street debates, podcasts). They will continuously act as local multipliers, supporting the communities where they live with up-to-date information about what the EP is doing for EU citizens and what citizens can do for a better EU future;- publicize the tools citizens have to interact with EU institutions and make their voices heard: citizens' initiatives, citizen dialogues, consultations, feedback, and EP elections.

How it ensured the visibility and promotion of Eurodesk:

Eurodesk gained considerable visibility during the implementation of the EP-GOAL project. During the initial training course, FPD coordinators introduced the young participants to the Eurodesk network and the Taurisano Local Antenna run by FPD. In the conception and recording phase of the podcasts aired on FattoRadio, the first podcast of the "EPGOAL" playlist was dedicated to the promotion of Eurodesk. Mattia, a young ambassador of Fattoria Pugliese Diffusa, interviewed Valentina Piras of Eurodesk Italy to find out together about Eurodesk's services and initiatives. The podcast can be accessed on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY_FvN8pbCg&list=PL-A_5wNOs2ZBzcusQSSXdcW_QnLJRZVjD&index=1&t=64s), Spotify, Facebook, and Instagram. Also during the final event at the Italian Headquarters of the European Parliament in Rome, the topic Eurodesk was mentioned among the various topics, by FPD coordinators.

How it respected the green principles:

Among the topics addressed by the project was the ecological and digital transition, which was the subject of some street debates. Recycled materials were used during the Street Debates.Podcast recording activities took place mainly through online links, avoiding travel and reducing environmental impact to zero. Even for the training courses and the final event, all the participants used the trains to reach the venues of the activities and public transportations for local travels.
